Health Week Day 1: CARE OF OUR INTERNAL ORGANS

CARE OF OUR INTERNAL ORGANS -by Dr. Bello Olalekan
The most neglected parts of our body are the internal organs for one major reason, they are not seen on the outside of our body and not visible to our eyes. Like the saying, “Out of sight is out of mind.” We forget them most often because we don’t see them every time like other parts. In most cases, we don’t care about them until our body system breaks down or we fall ill.  A lot of people don’t remember to check the state of their internal organs until they start to feel pains and discomforts here and there. But this could have been avoided if they were mindful of some certain things and took some precautions. They may be hidden from view but the organs inside our bodies are largely indispensable.
Let’s take a brief look at what these internal organs are and list out a few examples before we proceed to how to take proper care of them.
Internal Organs, otherwise known as Viscera are a collection of different tissues (cells) performing a specific function within the body to form a system. A collection of two or more organs within the body performing a specific function is called system. The Internal Organs are made up of different systems such as –
1.    Respiratory System: This comprises of the nose, pharynx, larynx (throat), bronchi, bronchioles and the lungs.
2.    Digestive System: the digestive system is consist of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and the anus.
3.    Circulatory System: It includes the heart, aorta, arteries, veins, capillaries –all blood vessels.
4.    Nervous System: The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves in the body.
5.    Reproductive System: Here, you have the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus in female and testes, vas deference, couper’s gland, prostate gland in male.
6.    Excretory System: The organs in this system are the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethral.
7.    Endocrine System: This system comprises of the thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, etc.
Having highlighted some internal organ systems, I will like to proceed to care of our internal organs. How do we look after those organs of our bodies that we don’t see with our eyes?
It is often said that our physical appearance or outlook is a mirror reflection of our internal body. In other words, whatever you take into your body reflects on your skin. It’s obvious on the outer layer of your body if you have been feeding well, for instance, or not. In some cases, it may take a long time to notice the effect of what you consume on your body though. For instance, the havoc done to your lungs is not immediately reflected on your skin the first day or few weeks you begin to indulge in the habit; same with alcohol. But I can tell you as a surgeon, I’ve seen quite a number of alarming incurable havocs done to the internal organs, which are not so obvious on the outer skin. Of course, you can’t see what’s happening on the outside. Such havocs can also be caused by drugs/medicines or even our normal food that we take in. You must take some necessary precautions in order to preserve your internal organs because, to a large extent, they determine the state of your health and the longevity of your life or what you see on the outside. Now, what are things to be mindful of in order to keep our internal organs intact?
1.    Personal Hygiene
2.    Balance Dieting
3.    Regular Exercise
4.    Avoid toxins (poisons), contacts, radiations
5.    Avoid alcohol, cigarette smoking, etc.
6.    Do a periodic medical check-ups (laboratory tests, imaging, etc.) like once a year.
7.    Avoid stress
8.    Good sexual practices
9.    Avoid taking drugs without prescriptions
10. Good family planning/child spacing practices
11. Avoid living a sedentary life
12. Weight control
13. Avoid eating late at night
14. Get involved in recreational activities.
Thanks.
