You know, what gives me joy here is that someone out there, AT LEAST, ONE PERSON stands to benefit SOMETHING FROM EVERYTHING that is displayed here! God is to be praised forever for wonderful testimonies, which I keep receiving in different places and from several persons. You are all appreciated. Thanks for your support this far.

Please, be encouraged to keep posting your comments (if you have any); you might want to read over again and drop your QUESTIONS too. On a Final Note... (Health Week)

So on a final note of this season’s HEALTH WEEK, we will be discussing a terrible infection –TOILET INFECTION or TOILET DISEASE (as it is commonly called). No doubt you know what I’m talking about already if you have been there before! So sweet to scratch yet so hurtful and appalling to behold! You don’t want to experience that if you haven’t, dear. It's disgusting!
Now, what exactly is this thing called TOILET INFECTION? How is it contacted? Is it actually transmitted through the sharing of toilet? Do we have the right conceptions about it? Again, is it a peculiar infection to the female folk alone or can men also contact the infection? What about children? How does it look like? How does the infection manifest –signs &symptoms? Does it have a cure? That must be very expensive if it has any, you’d say. How can this awful/disgraceful infection be prevented? Etcetera etcetera… So many questions on somebody’s mind out there… Not to worry, we’ve got a pharmacist in the house to handle it. Watch out for Pharm. Timeyin Ogungbe’s presentation, in a short while… Enjoy reading!

‪#‎GoodMorning‬! I love you all!

Health Week Day 4 -DIET

DIET
by Sewhenu I. Opasina (Nee Ajo)
Diet has to do with your feeding plan, especially your choice of food. We’ve all been thought in schools of how important it is to eat a BALANCED DIET, which are:
Carbohydrate
Protein
Vitamin
Fats & Oil
Mineral Salts
(plus) Water

Yes, we know but how well have we kept to the rules? We need to go back to the drawing board in order to avoid doing a lot of harm to our health. What are the risks involved if we don’t feed well?
Effects of a Poor Diet
(Here, we will be using nutrition interchangeably with diet)
Good nutrition, based on healthy eating is one essential factor that helps us to stay healthy and be active.
WHAT CAUSES POOR NUTRITION?
Poor eating habits include –
Under- Eating or Over-Eating
Not having enough of the healthy foods we need each day
Consuming too many types of food and drink, which are low in fibre or high in fat, salt and/or sugar.
These unhealthy eating habits can affect our nutrient intake, including all constituents of a balanced diet as well as fibre and fluid.

HOW DOES POOR NUTRITION AFFECT US?
Poor nutrition can do a lot of havoc to our daily health and wellbeing and reduce our ability to lead an enjoyable and active life.
Poor diet can contribute to stress, tiredness and our capacity to work, and over time, it can contribute to the risk of developing some illnesses and other health problems such as:
• eating disorders.
• being overweight or obese
• tooth decay
• high blood pressure
• high cholesterol
• heart disease and stroke
• diabetes
• osteoporosis
• some cancers
• depression
• weight loss (you become lean)
• memory loss or low mental abilities
• hair loss
• weak immune system (inability of the body to effectively or efficiently fight diseases due to lack of necessary nutrients), etc.

TAKE THESE STEPS TO START EATING WELL.
• Have a good variety of healthy foods from the five food groups each day.
• Make sure you eat fruits and vegetables each day
• Eat sugary, fatty or salty food occasionally and only in small amounts
• Drink fresh, clean water instead of sugary drinks
• instead of junks or unhealthy food, go for healthy recipes that look and taste good
• plan your meals ahead and shop for healthy ingredients –yes, it’s good to plan ahead
• enjoy cooking and eating healthy food with family or friends and without distractions such as the television.
• Once Again, IT IS FAR SAFER TO COOK YOUR FOOD.
• (Also) TEACH your CHILDREN/family the RIGHT WAY TO GO when it comes to eating well (as well as other aspects of life). They learn more from what they see you do.

Now that you have been reminded again, beyond the theories we know, let’s practically drop those poor eating habits over for better ones. Thanks.

"WELCOME BACK!"

Welcome back! Today, on HEALTH WEEK, we’ll be discussing “ITEM 7”. Aha...! You know what I mean… FOOD or “DIET”, to be precise.
Yes, we know, BALANCED DIET is no news but the question is this, “Are we doing it rightly?” Do we actually pay attention to eating well –as we should (based on body demands) and when it is due in reality?
Let’s find out...
Good morning, lovely people!

Health Week Day 3 -HERBS VERSUS DRUGS

HERBS VERSUS DRUGS
(IS IT RIGHT TO TAKE BOTH SIMULTANEOUSLY) -by Mr. Bankole Abioye
INTRO: In Botany (i.e. the scientific study of the plant kingdom), a herb is a seed-bearing plant which does not have a woody stem and dies down to the ground after flowering. However literally, in a common language, a herb is any plant with leaves or seeds or flowers used for flavoring, food or medicine.
To start with, in Africa, most of our foods and soup are majorly from herbs. Herbs have a high level of minerals salt and vitamins. Research has shown that though every herb is nutritional, their medicinal powers differ from one another. For instance, herbs like Graviola (Anona Muricata), lemon grass and Bitter leaf are both nutritional and medicinal while Spinach can only be made reference to based on its nutritional value. Also, it is noteworthy that prior to the advent of western medicine, Africans and other parts of the world have always sorted out majority of their health problems with herbs! In fact, the Chinese acupuncture is almost a thousand years older than western medicine.
On the other hand, a drug can be defined as a medicine or a substance which has a marked physiological effect when taken into the body. However, drugs in the layman’s language refer to pills, western medicine from hydrocarbons. Today, a large part of the world’s population prefers drugs, while others are in support of herbs. However, a section advocates combining BOTH. This I believe is where our focus lies today.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE USE HERBS AND DRUGS ALTERNATELY OR SIMULTANEOUSLY
I wish to highlight a few reasons I’ve discovered over the years.
PIRACY: In some countries, fake drugs are rampant. Patients die because they bought expired or fake drugs. Personally we are quick to make observations in our organizations. At times, the container, shape and size of the drug remain the same, but the chemical content has been altered. This is very bad. MONEY FACTOR: Severally the western drugs are about twice the price of the orthodox herbs. In a country where poverty is prevalent, surely they will be such issues of looking for the alternative IGNORANCE: A vast number of the world’s population remains in the dark as far as merits and demerits of both orthodox or herbal and western medicine is concerned.
DESPERATION: Health matters sometimes deteriorate into a life and death issue. So patients prescribe drugs for themselves (self-medication) and they take everything that looks promising.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT HERBS
They don’t really have a strict dosage adherence compared to western medicine.
Their damages on the body (if any) are easily reversible compared to western drugs.
There is a closer relationship between herbs and the body than drugs.

IS IT REALLY SAFE TO COMBINE BOTH?
My counsel:
POTENCY OF DRUGS BEING USED BY PATIENT: The kind and potency of the drug you are combining your herb with sometimes determine if it is okay to combine both or not. For instance, from experience, there are some drugs you use with strict discipline. Even the food you eat is regulated at the period of drug administration. Such drugs are no-go areas.
ALTERNATING HAS BETTER CHANCES OF SAFETY
There’s greater safety if they are not used simultaneously; i.e. you stop the drugs then start the herbs other than using them TOGETHER.
Consult your doctor: Most doctors in our age patronize herbs because they are aware of the healing powers of herbs. The entire world in the next 2 decades might be forced to return to herbal medicine considering the dangers being poised by GLOBAL WARMING. Weighing your health conditions, the doctor will also be in the best position to counsel you.
Remember we don’t all have same health issues.
I wish you be in good health always and that it may be WELL WITH YOU. Thank you.

Here again... on HEALTH WEEK.

Good morning to YOU there! Yes, YOU!
We’re back again and here’s the FOCUS FOR THE DAY –
“HERBS VERSUS DRUGS”
The argument is not really about if we should take any or not; but should both compositions be combined simultaneously in treatment? In order words, should you also drink “agbo” (boiled or squeezed leaves), "agunmu" (in powder form) "roots" “bitters”, “native concoction”, herbal mixtures, etc. WHILE on medical treatment? If you know what I mean… But first, let’s find out what today’s presentation has got for us on this. Don’t forget to post your comments, make your contributions or ask your questions too. Thanks for coming!

HEALTH WEEK DAY 2 -HOUSEKEEPING

HOUSEKEEPING –by Gbubemi Nnaji (Nee Oburoh)
Housekeeping refers to how the home is managed -duties and chores involved in the running of a household such as cleaning, cooking, home maintenance, shopping, laundry and bill pay. These tasks may be performed by any of the household members, or by other persons hired to perform the tasks. According to the Victorian Era, Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management, the housekeeper is second in command in the home and the housekeeper must consider him/herself as the immediate representative in the absence of the head of the home.
Usually and mostly, the wife is said to be the home manager. There are some basic duties she carries out, which include, sweeping the home, laundry, cooking, shopping, ensuring good health of family members, using available resources to meet the various needs of every individual in the home, etc.
In carrying out these duties, there are some principles the home keeper should observe so that she doesn't get easily worn out and eventually not get things done.
Principles (Tips) of getting things done easily in the home:
1.         Do tasks from easiest to hardest
2.         Dove-tail activities.
3.         She should try doing more than one activities at a time like washing dishes while she cooks.
4.         Wash clothes from lightest and easiest to heaviest and most difficult.
5.         Buy household items frequently used in bulk
6.         Plan activities before hand and not forgetting to,
7.         Rest in order to recuperate and be effective for the next task
8.         Arrange priorities from most important to less important to avoid stress. It may not be possible to get everything planned done in most cases. Who is perfect anyway?
The head of the home -the husband and children can also help reduce the stress by helping out in duties. I personally don't like the idea of leaving my house duties, especially when it pertains to my kids, in the care of just anybody because “I no won hear stories that touch the heart o!” (laughs)
In summary, I’ll just say, you may not be able to finish up all in a day but ensure you keep your mind on keeping your house and home in order. Woman, you’ve got to do more to do on that. If the house looks unkempt for instance, the woman is the first suspect –it appears she is not doing enough. And remember as the saying goes, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
Thank you!

Welcome to HEALTH WEEK, DAY 2

Good morning! It’s another episode of the HEALTH WEEK. Today, we will be looking at “HOUSEKEEPING”. It doesn’t sound strange, does it? Absolutely not. However, where I do have questions personally is why majority of us still don’t get it right even though we are aware of it’s importance, benefits as well as implications of not keeping the house/home in a good shape.
I think a little reminder, coupled with a few tips is good medicine to the mind. Don’t you think?
Huh? Did I just hear that? “That’s women affair." Really? Is it? Hmmm…
Let’s see what we’ve got today from Gbubemi Nnaji.
Thanks for coming.

Health Week Day 1: CARE OF OUR INTERNAL ORGANS

CARE OF OUR INTERNAL ORGANS -by Dr. Bello Olalekan
The most neglected parts of our body are the internal organs for one major reason, they are not seen on the outside of our body and not visible to our eyes. Like the saying, “Out of sight is out of mind.” We forget them most often because we don’t see them every time like other parts. In most cases, we don’t care about them until our body system breaks down or we fall ill.  A lot of people don’t remember to check the state of their internal organs until they start to feel pains and discomforts here and there. But this could have been avoided if they were mindful of some certain things and took some precautions. They may be hidden from view but the organs inside our bodies are largely indispensable.
Let’s take a brief look at what these internal organs are and list out a few examples before we proceed to how to take proper care of them.
Internal Organs, otherwise known as Viscera are a collection of different tissues (cells) performing a specific function within the body to form a system. A collection of two or more organs within the body performing a specific function is called system. The Internal Organs are made up of different systems such as –
1.    Respiratory System: This comprises of the nose, pharynx, larynx (throat), bronchi, bronchioles and the lungs.
2.    Digestive System: the digestive system is consist of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and the anus.
3.    Circulatory System: It includes the heart, aorta, arteries, veins, capillaries –all blood vessels.
4.    Nervous System: The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves in the body.
5.    Reproductive System: Here, you have the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus in female and testes, vas deference, couper’s gland, prostate gland in male.
6.    Excretory System: The organs in this system are the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethral.
7.    Endocrine System: This system comprises of the thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, etc.
Having highlighted some internal organ systems, I will like to proceed to care of our internal organs. How do we look after those organs of our bodies that we don’t see with our eyes?
It is often said that our physical appearance or outlook is a mirror reflection of our internal body. In other words, whatever you take into your body reflects on your skin. It’s obvious on the outer layer of your body if you have been feeding well, for instance, or not. In some cases, it may take a long time to notice the effect of what you consume on your body though. For instance, the havoc done to your lungs is not immediately reflected on your skin the first day or few weeks you begin to indulge in the habit; same with alcohol. But I can tell you as a surgeon, I’ve seen quite a number of alarming incurable havocs done to the internal organs, which are not so obvious on the outer skin. Of course, you can’t see what’s happening on the outside. Such havocs can also be caused by drugs/medicines or even our normal food that we take in. You must take some necessary precautions in order to preserve your internal organs because, to a large extent, they determine the state of your health and the longevity of your life or what you see on the outside. Now, what are things to be mindful of in order to keep our internal organs intact?
1.    Personal Hygiene
2.    Balance Dieting
3.    Regular Exercise
4.    Avoid toxins (poisons), contacts, radiations
5.    Avoid alcohol, cigarette smoking, etc.
6.    Do a periodic medical check-ups (laboratory tests, imaging, etc.) like once a year.
7.    Avoid stress
8.    Good sexual practices
9.    Avoid taking drugs without prescriptions
10. Good family planning/child spacing practices
11. Avoid living a sedentary life
12. Weight control
13. Avoid eating late at night
14. Get involved in recreational activities.
Thanks.
