But there was this particular woman, she should be in her early 60's, she not only came close, she suddenly brought out some biscuits, obviously not freshly opened, from a clear transparent polythene wrap. And immediately the biscuits were out of the wrapper, she gave a piece to the child but the young mother who couldn't hide her surprise and maybe fear, quickly snatched the biscuit from her child; now you know that's not going to be easy... Not as it sounds. She grabbed it, not minding the child's scream or the strangers' questioning or curious stares, which are now fixed on her. "But why are you
disturbing her?" The stranger asked, "I have kids at home too! Let her eat the biscuit!" "Thank you, ma." The young mother said, "But she's okay. She has hers in her bag; besides, my baby can't go about receiving gifts or food from strangers everywhere... Etc." Then she thanked the woman again. After all, the older woman asked for her (the young mother) to return her biscuit since the child is not going to eat it. She was surprised at the request but she gave it out anyway with another round of thanks and apologies.
Now, what's your take on kids receiving gifts from strangers?
What would you say on giving out gifts, especially food items to kids? Is it right or wrong? If you say it's right, would you suggest a better way to do it?
If you were in the young mother's shoes, how would you respond? What would you do or say? Would you allow your child have the food item or eat it?
Or share your experience with us and tell us how you handled it.
